* Student may be asked to perform any combination from lower grades than the grade that they are going for at the examiners discretion.
* Combinations will generally be done forward, but may also be done backward at examiners discretion.

KUMITE (Sparring)
IPPON KUMITE. (Based on Kissaki Kai method)
* Footwork: Step as required to complete block/parry and counter. Don’t worry too much about classical stances.
* Students position themselves an arms distance apart, facing each other, feet about shoulder width apart and (unless otherwise stated) arms in high Yoi position (elbows close to body and slightly in front, hands shoulder height and roughly 2 to 3 fist distance in front of shoulder joint). Punches & wrist grabs are performed from this position. Attacker can step in if required for lapel & neck grabs. For Mae Geri, attacker steps back with kicking leg.
* Defenders hands can be open or closed.
* “Low” or “High” grabs refers to the position of the defender Yoi. High being as described above, low being the more traditional Yoi with hands at waist height.
* If a counter does not work for any reason, or the specified counter is not available; then defender should instantly counter with anything functional.
* Although not specified every time, when blocking/parrying to inside or outside the defender should move to the side, off the line of attack.
* At any point lower grade Kumite can be requested at examiners discretion.
* After performing the required defence, the defender can add 1 or 2 techniques (including kicks, restraints or throws) if they wish to ensure a thorough finish.
* Techniques in red are for adults only.
