People take up martial arts for many different reasons and each is equally valid depending on what the student actually wants from their training. At Holistic Karate, our approach to martial arts is:-.
- Correct body mechanics/structures, internal connection of muscle groups, balance and correct breathing. Together this generates seemingly extraordinary amounts of power.
- The above point improves posture and is very good for long term health as well as fitness. It also teaches you to, “look inwards”, improving self awareness.
- We include situational awareness, street psychology, vulnerable points and legal/moral implications.
- Self development/awareness should go hand in glove with martial arts as a calm mind can tap into a higher intelligence. This is not just good for self protection; it’s good for all aspects of your life.
Our core system is Shotokan Karate which we teach to high technical standards and is noted as being one of the most powerful & effective Karate styles for self defence.
Holistic Karate is for ages 13 and above, giving you a dynamic combination of ancient battle tested techniques along with modern self defence psychology.
Classes are taught in a friendly and supportive environment with no egos. Training is tailored to the individuals needs, capabilities and limitations as not everybody can move the same way!

Instructor
Charlie Wildish is a 5th Dan Black Belt with an extensive knowledge of martial arts and self-protection. He has relaxed and friendly teaching style, but still teaches to high technical standards so that students get the most out of their training.
He does not teach martial arts as a sport, but rather as a method of self-protection and self-development.
Self-Protection
Self-defence is the physical skills to defend yourself. Kicking, punching, striking and so on; also known as “hard skills”. There are also what is know as “soft skills”, such as being able de-escalate a situation or dissuade a would-be attacker using assertive voice and body language. Soft skills can be highly effective, with nobody getting hurt and no difficult legal ramifications even if you succeed.
Self-protection is a combination of both hard and soft skills!
Self-Protection For Women
Woman obviously have a big disadvantage over men when it come to self-protection. Not just the difference in size and strength, but also the nature of the attack itself. Many martial arts train for sport, which is fine. But normally you’d fight another woman and fight in categories of similar size and/or grade. It’s a fair fight!
But when you’re taken by surprise, by a much larger stronger opponent and you may be wearing tight fitting clothes and/or heals; “fair” doesn’t come in to it. You need to prepare for an “unfair” situation.

Looking to get back into training?
We’ve had a number of people come to us who have trained before in Karate (or other martial arts), sometimes many years in the past. Sometimes they are not sure what to expect being older and maybe not as fit as they were. Sometimes people were not completely convinced with the direction they were going in before and are looking for something different.
